K-ETA for Korea: Who's Exempt Right Now, and What Changes in 2027
K-ETA's eligible-country list grew to 116 nations this week, and the number that decides whether you need to do anything before you fly to Seoul got less attention: only 22 of those countries still skip K-ETA entirely, and that arrangement has an expiration date.
That's the gap the "full list" headlines don't spell out. K-ETA eligibility and K-ETA exemption are two different systems on two different clocks. Several outlets ran the 116-country number today, but the part that decides whether you're filling out a form this month is the smaller list, not the big one.
What K-ETA Costs and How Long It Lasts
For the 116 countries on the eligible list, K-ETA replaces a visa for short trips. Apply at k-eta.go.kr, upload a passport photo and passport scan, and pay a fee the official site listed at ₩10,000 (about $7) when I checked this week. Approval usually clears within 24 hours, though the site itself recommends applying at least 72 hours out in case yours doesn't. Once approved, it's valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever hits first, covering unlimited entries of up to 90 days each.
Fill it out once. Forget about it for three years. That part of the system is genuinely simple.
First-timer detail worth knowing before you start the form: it wants a recent digital photo against a plain background, face filling most of the frame, not a scan of a printed passport photo. Take a fresh one on a phone against a blank wall rather than reusing whatever scan you already have saved.
The 22 Countries That Skip K-ETA Entirely — For Now
Passport holders from these 22 countries and territories can walk up to Korean immigration the way travelers always could, no application, no ₩10,000, no waiting on approval:
- North America: the US (Guam included), Canada
- Oceania: Australia, New Zealand
- East Asia: Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore
- Europe: the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Poland
That "free ride" runs through December 31, 2026, an extension Korea's foreign ministry posted back in December, and a date independent travel guides confirm as current. If your passport is on this list, don't spend $7 applying for something you don't need yet.
Do You Need K-ETA for a Layover in Korea?
Depends entirely on whether you leave the terminal. Stay airside at Incheon between connecting flights and you need nothing beyond your passport and onward boarding pass, no matter your nationality, according to Incheon's own transit guidance. Step through immigration, for the free K-Transit city tour, a hotel stay, or just food outside security, and the normal rules apply: K-ETA if you're not one of the 22, nothing extra if you are.
A mistake long layovers invite: assuming a same-terminal connection automatically counts as staying airside. It doesn't always. Some transfers route through immigration depending on the airline and terminal pairing, so check your specific itinerary when you book, not at the gate with a boarding pass in hand.
Anyone who's sat through a five-hour layover knows the sound that gives it away either way: gate announcements in three or four languages layered over each other, non-stop, whether you're in the transit lounge or already past the immigration desk.
What Changes on January 1, 2027
The exemption ends outright. Every one of the 116 eligible countries, the current 22 included, needs K-ETA to enter Korea from January 1, 2027 — already the announced hard stop after three straight one-year extensions, not a rumor or a projection. Landing in Korea in early 2027 on a passport that's currently on the exempt list? That date belongs on your calendar now, months before you'd otherwise think about it.
Nothing changes for the 94 countries already required to hold K-ETA. For the 22, the difference is that the exemption ends on a fixed date instead of getting extended again. The last renewal wasn't confirmed until two days before the old deadline it replaced — Korean-language outlets were still reporting traveler confusion and no official word less than two weeks out. Don't bank on a fourth extension landing in time to save your trip.
Where you land on this changes what to do about it. American, British, Canadian, Australian, or otherwise on the 22-country list and flying before New Year's Eve? Do nothing, just bring the passport you'd bring anyway. Same passport but flying in January 2027 or later? Apply once the window opens and treat it as a new step in your packing list, not an afterthought. Already required to hold K-ETA today, regardless of nationality? None of this changes anything for you.
I haven't run an application through this month's numbers myself, so I can't tell you how fast approval is moving right now — budget a few extra days if you're applying close to departure, whatever the site promises. Check which list your passport sits on before you book anything else, then get back to planning the parts of the trip you're excited about.
